Week 2, Day 9, 15 September 2011

today's agenda
Due to not much progress to the concepts, we are unable to move on from day nine

However today we pretty much decided how we want our ideas to be executed.

Concept One( Artificial Singapore )
Metaphor: Jewel Box

Boxes on display

Idea one:  Different size of boxes on display,
When the viewers opens them, they will see different
projection in it.

Idea two: Insert token of fines to installation to see how a
                           country slowly evolves and change.

idea three: Planting a nation. The water sound becomes money sound
With planting a plant logic, too much water, the plant will die
but too little, the plant cant grow.

Idea four: The mirror turns foggy due to the hot steam.

the message are hidden.
However when the mirror fog up,  the hidden message will be revealed.

Concept Two ( Complaints )
Metaphor: Echo
Idea one: A installation that mimic
what the user did. To allow them to feel
how he/she looks like when complaining
and might be annoying.

Idea three: Reflect upon yourself.
When you complaints, a machine will take a picture
of you, to remind you how ugly you looks when you complaints.

Idea four: Smelly
When you complained, a smelly odor will be produced.

Concept Three ( Bringing Strangers Together )
Metaphor: -

Idea one: Play tag
Using shadows, the catcher with shadow need to
tag another person to be released from the shadow.

Idea two: Paralanguage
a mutual collaboration of sound communication

Example: The microphones are installed with different default sounds
however the user can control the volume and pitch with their input of sound.
~ the default sounds can be musical instruments/ environment???

Concept Four ( Traditional Communication )
Metaphor: -

Target group: Teenagers who communicate with acquaintance
                          using modern technology.

Ideas: None

However we found some research that are quite meaningful
Forms of traditional communication

Why need traditional communication

Week 2, Day 8, 14 September 2011

We have come up with the final concepts of 4 ideas. Within the 4 ideas, we finalize on many other different kind type of possible installations.

CONCEPT 1
ARTIFICIAL SINGAPORE:
Singapore has been known as a 'Clean & Green' country, and to Singaporeans it is a 'FINE' country. There is a reason to this saying. It is because of our fines (e.g. littering, spitting, smoking etc.) that has been imposed to the people. With this fines, Singaporeans has been 'tamed' to go by law ("LAW BY LAW"). We wish to portray the ugly side of Singapore & Singaporeans. That the tourist do not see. It is like a self-mock of us Singaporeans, that we have to do in such way to show a better Singapore to the world.

CONCEPT 2
COMPLAIN:
Complain is a way/form of expression and dissatisfaction towards somebody or something. We think that complains is a way of a bad & negative communication. Everybody do complain at some point of time. Example, when you are on the bus and the driver drove really slowly caused you to be late for your work. And you will start complaining and pushing blame. But have you thought, why don't you wake up 15 minutes earlier? Another example, you were having dinner with your friends in a restaurant, and you spotted a housefly in your bowl of soup. You complaint to the waitress that they have a bad customer service and unhygienic. Have you thought, if you complain, you might cause the waitress/chef to have a pay cut, or even being sack? Have you ever thought that it is an accident? All these are caused by their perception of their perfect world, and other people intruding into their personal space (privacy, time, physically and mentally).

CONCEPT 3
BRINGING STRANGERS TOGETHER:
With the advance of technologies. Social network has been very popular among people in the world. And there is an increase of people making friends through social network. It can be the faster way of bringing people together. But many of these people has been turning to virtual love. We wish that people could get out and make friends.

CONCEPT 4
TRADITIONAL COMMUNICATION:
With the advance of technologies. There has been a lost in traditional communication. For example, handwritten letters, songs, poems, stories, personally present at an event. We think that traditional communication is the basic foundation of a human being. What we are today is because of our history. We think that these traditional communication methods are not to be lose. We hope to bring back the old traditional way of communication back to the modern, fast-paced society.

Week 2, Day 7, 13 September 2011

Before we can even start on the discussion, Mr Andrew came in to show us some photos/videos of the projects/installation/exhibition he saw in Australia. Some of the projects that is kind of interesting are..

  • info graphics
  • silhouette sticker + speech bubble interactive installation
  • tuck-of-war project ( telecommunication but more of a competing kind)
  • MIT- sensor 3D- goggle DoppelLab ( technical showcase)
  • 3-screen: interactive globe
  • thumbprint interactive installation : connected to a projector ( map out the streets according to the lines on your thumbprint)
  • build things (anything) out of tones of lego
  • info graphics map ( using special pen and touch on a special paper that have a very fine dots like a bar code - tiny camera that pick up the codes will appear on the screen eg. population
  • installation of something that looks like a sun that have lots of tube and red liquid in it. it pump out red liquid to portray chaos and order
  • "Talking" Piano- changes its frequency so it seems like its talking. A project theme called "machine come to life".
  • stock motion, playing with lights, shadow and LED
  • flower origami
  • seal toys that behave like a real pet for elderly in Japan
  • x-ray vision on dead animals
  • a machine that connect to the world movie database. Able to type any keyword and any movie that uses or related to that word will appear on the screen projector.

We further develop all our ideas and come up with more ideas. We are still stuck at the HOW part which is the interaction part and we need to have a very strong installation that convey the messages that we want to send to the users..

These are the list of ideas that we had came up with...

concept one idea one ( artificial singapore )

Idea one:

Intent: to address to the world, should we head to a money minded nation?
Is singapore really like what it's packaged? a fine nation or A 'FINE' NATION?

To let people know what we had become so civilized are with ugly truth behind that is never told.

maybe message:
The country is what it is now, are due to rules and fines.
Certain rules are set to keep a "discipline" however this made
singaporean to be more money minded. Even while enjoying the fireworks,
people tends to jokingly say hey there goes our taxation money~

Is this what we want the world to be like?
Money concentrated? Singapore had been too focused on economy that the art. culture and leisure
are limited. Even the existing ones are created/ build with tourism in mind. there is nothing really for
singaporean, it's for "branding singapore" shouting
" WE are harmonious, we have nice exhibition in museums cause we know arts ah yadayah"

Message, Shouting out to the world is this a life we want? chasing behind money cause we are afraid to be poor and so?
or we want a place thats with idealism?

How? (metaphor)
Singapore fine system.

concept two ( everyone made mistakes, that's why nobody perfect )

What's the problem?
humans are being selfish derived from law

general: We always look at the negative side of others but not reflecting on ourselves = quarrel (bad communication)

Who are we addressing to?
people who might not have noticed this.

intention.
We want individual to reflect on their acts before accusing other party and cause a "negative communication"

Message of this project.
think before you act
Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live

metaphor?
echo?

solution(how?)

concept three ( see with ur ears )

What's the problems?
One would not approach another if there isnt a purpose.

who are we addressing to?
people with too much expectation of others.

intention:
to remind the users,
life might not always be the way you want.

message
expect the unexpected
more than some pretty face.

metaphor?

concept four ( traditional art + factory )

whats the problem???
Many countries are too focus on economy related education.
If there is a need, they will just "import "foreign talent when feel like they are lacking talents in areas.
They would not go a step to nurture  local talents.

Who are we addressing to?
the future of the world.

intention:
To sound out that if this continues, some talents will just extinct.

Message.

metaphor:
Factory ( the world is like factory the system only creates one type of people.
and you keep doing fast as we need to compete to other
country that the quantity is there but no quality in the end

How?

concept five ( language + strangers )

what is the problem?
There is no common language how can we bring strangers together?

Who are we addressing to?
People who do not share a common language and want to get to
know each other.

intention:
bring strangers together

Message:
communication works beyond language

metaphor?
gaming?

how?

Week 1, Day 5, 09 September 2011

Today's agenda

After setting today's agenda, the team continued from where we had stopped.

CONCEPT 3 (SOUND EFFECTS + touch)
As we are unable to further develop and define the intent of this concept,
the team start to relate to experience we had, the one that leaves a big impact to us
is a exhibition, dialogue in the dark.

This exhibition made us experience the vulnerability of self in a world of total darkness.
However due to this, it bring people, be it friends or stranger together as individual tends
to feel insecure and hope to "look" for some comfort in the dark.

Thus inspired from this experience, We hope that this CONCEPT 3 will
allow the audience to understand, what you see might not be what it is. Also addressing the current societies' living pace, we hope that our installation will able to deliver the message of the necessity of one to slow down their pace of living, thus we can take notice to our surrounding and appreciate what that's always there.

We feel that this quote best represents the message we hope to deliver.

"You can become blind by seeing each day as a similar one. Each day is a different one,
each day brings a miracle of its own. It's just a matter of paying attention to this miracle.”

-Paulo Coelho
After this we are kind of brain jammed.
Problems faced.
• How to enhance CONCEPT 2 (PAINTING & SHADOWS - GZ VISUAL ARTS)
What is the message that we want to send?
What kind of art is of the singapore flavor and well represent the team?
What can the interaction be as the current idea seems similar to some existing interactive installation.

• As for the concept 3, we need to look for the best sound and material that allow the audience to experience
the beauty of darkness and the perhaps their "ray of miracle" that they had been always been hoping for.

Rather than cooping in the lab, the other members went to Ode To Art and National Library to look for relevant materials and inspiration.

First stop: Ode To Art
Location: Raffles City (Near City Hall Station)

This art gallery was introduced by my friend few months back.
What I've recall during my last visit was, the gallery consist art and sculpture works done by local and overseas artists. Even though their main purpose was to sell the art piece, it was a great opportunity for me to introduce it to my team mates for a visit, hoping it will help us to build more understanding on chinese art work.

Observation that I've made:
1. The use of color - Most of their work uses Red and Blue. Followed by the hue color of it.
2. Work based on personal history, world war period or famous celebrity like Bruce Lee.
3. Mild abstract; Most of the work are pretty straight forward and tells a story.
4. They are usually done in large scale; Loud.

Next stop: National Library
Location: Bugis

We went up to Level 4 the Art section to search for relevant books that may be useful for our project. Its a pity that they wouldn't allow us to loan these books back to school. Hence we had to spend the afternoon in the library to browse through and taking pictures of it.

Happen to came across this paragraph in a book about China contemporary art.

" As Chinese society has become more affluent and more open, incidents of government censorship occur far less often. Experimental contemporary art can be seen in museums around the country, including the National Art Museum in Beijing, the Shanghai Art Museum in Shanghai, and the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou. But artists still know, in the back of their minds, that their work is subject to official scrutiny, and that they can easily run afoul of the police if they breach the three Nos: no politics, no violence, no nudity. "

- Karen Wong

We search for books that are china art related and some interesting books that we think is relevant and helpful for us. It was not for loan so we secretly took pictures of some of the interesting art installation that we found.

Things that I want to share after reading all those books:

 1) What I like about this book-puzzle concept is that it is very direct and creative. Basically, the book is cut into a puzzle like shape and there are lots of it lying on the floor that can be stack into many different ways. The intent is just that they want creative people to get together to create something creative out of it. People are able to stack into a building or whatever shape they want and they can just come together and do it together even if they are strangers or have no art background. They can still be creative by creating something "unique" on their own.

2) This next installation is by the same artist from China, Liang Shaoji. He was doing about silkworms.

So for this Sound Installation the artist connected headphones to the silkworm's resting area, located in another room unseen by the users.

The resulting atmosphere was one of the contemplation, as viewers were impelled to concentrate and connect with the animal in an unusual way.

For this Light installation, created by the same artist, he created neon pieces that duplicate the rhythmic swirls of the silkworm's movement. Used of sound and visual (lights).

3) There are a few quotes/statement that I found from the book

  • "Designing to inform is not about being didactic, it's about making spaces in which people can make up their own minds.”  -Frernando Pessoa
  • A strong question:   "Be what I think I am? But I think of so many thing!"
  • "Communication through entertainment relies on making an emotional connection with the audience, through its reaction to the drama and atmosphere of the experience."
  • "To create an unforgettable experience, the designer must understand the hopes and expectations of an audience, and then exceed them."

4) I also read about this two friends who came together and create an installation, "Universal Figure" (but unfortunately there are no pictures). They did on the interconnection between people. They decided to choose a universal figure to show that there are no differences between races and cultures displayed. They belief in the power of the human spirit, trying to reshape those human beings who have been twisted by modern civilization.

5) Overall, after going to the Ode To Art and research on the China art, I can conclude that..

China people they like to do about...
  • their people
  • firework
  • great wall of china
  • their poems
  • the colour RED
  • their ancestors and artifacts
  • illness
  • sexuality
  • their identity (small eyes, sumo wrestling, brush stroke)
  • famous people
  • their heroes and idol

As for me I continued the website framework coding that i had started on Tuesday.
It had been progressing pretty good as I found the solution of Vertical and horizontal alignment.
jquery coding for daily documentation page. However 've yet to find a solution for a customized
scrollbar.
